Comfort Dental Lounge specializes in treating periodontal diseases (a persistent infection in the soft tissues of your mouth). Periodontal disease is most often preceded by gingivitis which is a bacterial infection of the gum tissue. If gingivitis goes untreated, more serious problems such as abscesses and bone loss can occur. Symptoms of gingivitis include swelling and tenderness of the gums, bleeding during brushing and flossing, and redness, tenderness, and sensitivity of the gums.
In order to diagnose periodontal disease, a comprehensive examination must be performed. This is done by placing a periodontal probe within the space between the sulcus (pocket or space) and the surface of each tooth. The depth of a healthy sulcus measures three millimeters or less and does not bleed. The periodontal probe helps indicate if pockets are deeper than three millimeters. As periodontal disease progresses, the pockets usually get deeper. Your Comfort Dental Lounge dentist will use pocket depths, amount of bleeding, inflammation, tooth mobility, etc., to make a diagnosis.
